Vaping: How it negatively impacts your skin

Vaping: How it negatively impacts your skin

As you’ve all probably heard, health ministers in the UK have announced that the UK government will be banning single use vapes as early as next week. Single use vapes or disposable vapes are largely targeted and marketed to under 18s through luminous coloured packaging and sweet flavours.

Vaping has become increasingly popular as a supposed healthier alternative to smoking. As it’s relatively new, we don’t fully know the effects of vaping long term and there are a lot of ongoing studies trying to understand the effects on all aspects of our health. However, recent research has shown that vaping can have negative effects on the skin, causing premature ageing, wrinkles, and skin sagging, as well as acne and other skin conditions.

What we aim to do in this article is to highlight the negative impacts of vaping on the skin, including premature ageing, wrinkles, and skin sagging, as well as acne and other skin conditions. Additionally, this article aims to provide solutions for rejuvenating aged and damaged skin caused by vaping, including recommendations for a healthy diet and exercise, vitamins and minerals that promote healthy skin, and natural remedies for treating skin damage. The article will also mention the benefits of personalised skincare and how it can provide targeted and customised solutions for combating the negative effects of vaping on the skin.

How Vaping Negatively Impacts Skin

Vaping can have negative effects on the skin, precipitating a range of conditions such as acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines or wrinkles.

Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that can be exacerbated by vaping. It is proposed nicotine in e-cigarettes can constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the skin, leading to inflammation and the development of flares of acne. Additionally, vaping may cause an overproduction of sebum, the oily substance that clogs pores and can lead to breakouts. The chemicals in e-cigarettes may also disrupt the skin's microbiome, which can contribute to the development of acne flares.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness and inflammation on the face. Vaping may exacerbate rosacea by causing inflammation due to the presence of chemicals and irritants in e-cigarettes. Nicotine can also cause blood vessels to constrict, leading to a worsening of rosacea symptoms. It is possible, vaping can trigger rosacea flare-ups or make existing rosacea symptoms worse.

Fine lines and wrinkles

Vaping may cause premature ageing of the skin, leading to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. The chemicals in e-cigarettes might cause oxidative stress, which may lead to damage collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and youthful-looking. Additionally, nicotine can cause blood vessels to constrict, reducing blood flow and leading to a dull, uneven complexion. Over time, this may contribute to the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

Overall, vaping can have a range of negative effects on the skin, including acne, rosacea, and fine lines or wrinkles. It is important to take steps to protect the skin from the negative effects of vaping, such as avoiding smoking and vaping altogether, staying hydrated, eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and using sunscreen daily. Additionally, personalised skincare can provide targeted and customised solutions for repairing and rejuvenating the skin damaged by vaping. By taking these steps, individuals can help maintain healthy and youthful-looking skin.

Dangerous chemicals found in vapes and illegal vapes

Dangerous chemicals found in vapes and illegal vapes include:

  • Nicotine, which is highly addictive and can lead to a range of health problems
  • Formaldehyde, a carcinogenic chemical that can cause cancer
  • Acrolein, a toxic chemical that can cause lung damage and respiratory problems
  • Propylene glycol, which can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems
  • Diacetyl, a chemical used to create a buttery flavor in e-cigarettes that can cause a condition called popcorn lung, which is a serious respiratory disease
  • Heavy metals such as lead, nickel, and chromium, which can be toxic and cause a range of health problems including respiratory issues, kidney damage, and neurological problems

It is important to be aware of the potential dangers of vaping and to avoid using vapes that contain dangerous chemicals. If you are concerned about your health or the health of a loved one, it is important to seek advice from a healthcare professional.

Dr Storm Says..

While I don’t believe we can say vaping causes acne because as the development of acne is much more complicated than that then there is some emerging evidence suggesting vaping may lead to flares of pre-existing acne and other skin conditions.

Several studies have found that smoking is an independent risk factor for premature facial wrinkles, ageing and multiple other skin conditions. Although vaping isn’t directly comparable (and it hasn’t been around long enough for reliable studies), it may cause the same negative effects on the skin due to oxidative stress and inflammation.

It is proposed nicotine in e-cigarettes can constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the skin as it does in smoking, leading to inflammation and the development of flares of acne and these other skin conditions. The chemicals in e-cigarettes may also disrupt the skin's microbiome, which can contribute to the development of acne flares.

I know addiction is hard to beat but you can do it! I think of the best ways to kick one addiction, is to replace it with another…for example exercise! I want to help my patients get the best skin of their lives but also promote good health and wellbeing. At the end of the day, if you are concerned about ageing and are spending money on your skin to try to prevent it, then why risk undoing it all by vaping!
